In 1997, Ted Turner pledged to give $1 billion to support United Nations causes. The gift – unprecedented at the time in both size and nature – led to the creation of the United Nations Foundation (UNF), and has served as a catalyst for change in philanthropy, on global issues, and at the UN.
In just nine years, UNF has invested more than $1 billion – over $600 million from Mr. Turner and $400 million more from individuals, corporations, governments, and NGOs – in UN activities that address key global challenges. To see a special web feature highlighting some of UNF's key efforts, visit www.unfoundation.org/billion.
UNF's work focuses on advancing the work of the United Nations, with a special focus on four key themes: Children's Health; the Environment; Women and Population; and Peace, Security, and Human Rights. Our work is organized around specific campaigns within these themes. These include:
– works to strengthen the relationship between the United States and the United Nations through outreach, communications, and advocacy. www.betterworldcampaign.org
– a nonpartisan alliance seeking to bridge the differences among business, labor, and environmental groups and identify energy policy options with broad political support. www.energyfuturecoalition.org
– a grassroots effort to promote sustainable tourism to World Heritage sites, in partnership with Expedia, Inc. and UNESCO. www.friendsofworldheritage.org
– a partnership with the National Basketball Association, Sports Illustrated, the United Methodist Church and others raising funds to purchase anti-malarial bed nets for delivery to Africa. www.nothingbutnets.net
